Schedule a 15-min Call
A free consultation to determine whether my practice is a good fit for your goals.
Meet with Dr. McKenzie
Your first session will be a 90-min evaluation, and we'll create a treatment plan together.
If this is an emergency, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Mckenzie Psychiatry, pllc is an online-based service and not available for in-person evaluations and treatment. Therefore, we rely on collaboration with primary care providers, local emergency services, and community mental health care organizations to provide additional support, when needed.
Psychopharmacology
I approach treatment holistically, including discussion of sleep, diet, and relationships in treatment. In some cases, medications can be helpful, even life-saving interventions. In others, the benefits from changes in routines and habits may be more significant than we would expect medicine to make.
What is Psychopharmacology?
Psychopharmacology is the use of medicine to treat mental illness. As a psychiatrist, Dr. McKenzie is trained to use both medication and talk therapy for treatment, and some conditions may be better helped by either or a combination of both.
As the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacologists defines it, “Psychopharmacology is the study of the use of medications in treating mental disorders. The complexity of this field requires continuous study in order to keep current with new advances. Psychopharmacologists need to understand all the clinically relevant principles of pharmacokinetics (what the body does to medication) and pharmacodynamics (what the medications do to the body).”

Psychoptherapy
I have experience providing multiple types of psychotherapy, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, dialectical-behavioral, and parent-management training. For some people, aspects of these different types of talk therapy can effectively improve symptoms of anxiety and depression.
What is Psychotherapy?
The technical term, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, sounds more complicated than it is. “Psychodynamic” is the idea that the way we perceive a relationship will change over time as we get to know the other person. “Psychotherapy” is talking with a professional to better understand one’s thoughts and feelings, and then developing ways to change them or cope with them.
As the American Psychiatric Association puts it, “Psychodynamic therapy focuses on the psychological roots of emotional suffering. Its hallmarks are self-reflection and self-examination, and the use of the relationship between therapist and patient as a window into problematic relationship patterns in the patient’s life. Its goal is not only to alleviate the most obvious symptoms but to help people lead healthier lives.”

Consultation
Healthcare professionals needing in-depth specialty advice or individuals seeking a second medical opinion may not require ongoing care. In those cases, a one-time Consultation can provide expert opinion to guide treatment decisions.
